Are you a leader or a mentor?

Colleagues,
 
MVP: A mentor is focused on your life and your growth.
 
Back in episodes 100 and 101 of The Assistant Principal Podcast, I interviewed my mentor, Dr. Jan Osborn and in episode 123, my other mentor Dr. Jacque Jacobs.
 
Both of my mentors were also my leaders who I directly reported to in my job. So, what’s the difference between the leader and a mentor?
 
Here’s what I came up with:

• Mentors stay with us, even after we have changed jobs.
• Mentors focus first on us as people, the job is secondary.
• Mentors are more honest with us than leaders are (in my experience).
• Mentors help us grow in the ways that help us move to who we want to be, not who someone else wants us to be.
• Mentors fill in the gaps of our growth process.

 
I have been blessed, so blessed to have incredible mentors.
