Colleagues, MVP: Helping people grow is the hack to increasing job satisfaction This image is making the rounds in LinkedIn. The thought is nice, but honestly, I’m not a big fan. Two things:
1) We need to be realistic about salary. You can't use the free time if you can't pay the bills. 2) Does everything else improve if you work for someone who is committed to helping you grow and develop as a person and a professional? Celebrations, thank you notes, free food is all wonderful, but if you really care about me, help me continually improve at doing the work I signed up to do? When I think about developing professionals, I keep going back to athletics. Is the best way to show appreciation for an Olympic athlete to give them a muffin, or to teach them something that helps them become better? Not at the point where you can teach them? Then just ask them to reflect and give them the space and the ears to do that. Today’s intention: Look at the people you appreciate and think about how you could help them find more joy or success in their work. Cheers! Frederick
