Too Much Information!

Colleagues,

Today we look at another sun ray from “our meetings are unproductive.” Today’s sunray is “too much information.”

Why is there too much information?
  • Aha! Usually 7 topics
    • lots of stuff could be read (instead of talked about)
      • But people don’t read it if we don’t talk about it!
        • I wonder how much of it is duplicate or not important?
  • Aha! We focus on the trivial stuff first
    • Why? Because we don’t ever finish anything. Covering stuff makes us feel like we at least got something done, even if it isn’t that important.
      • I wonder what if we put the most important thing first?
      • I wonder what would happen if we had only one item on the agenda?
      • I wonder what would happen if we had longer meetings? -group throws rocks =;^}

The organization of this sunray’s stair step is different from yesterday’s. There is no one right way and the final shape is dependent on the ideas. Notice:
  • The stairstep pattern is pronounced. There are two primary observations (both ahas) and each one has multiple steps.
  • The wonders hint at possible solutions without shutting down brainstorming. Just capture each statement. Avoid discussing pros and cons.

It is nice to think that there is a root problem, but often times there are multiple root problems. The good news is that addressing any of them can help improve the situation. We don’t need perfect, just better.

Writing about this technical exercise is new territory for me and I would like some feedback. Please just click here and tell me whether or not this is working for you. Bonus points for making a suggestion.

Do good and be well,

Frederick
