Colleagues,
We’ve talked a lot about developing people and the various resources and formats in which that can happen. I’ve mentioned coaching a few times but not given any specific coaching skill tips, so today we will look at a basic principle of coaching: specificity. Please spend 60 seconds watching this clip of University of Oklahoma defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery! Listen to the specificity of his feedback (watch 30-1:30).
One of the things that I cannot understand in our world is how elite level athletes expect and get powerful performance coaching, but most people in other fields get little or none. Imagine if you had a leadership coach who gave you detailed technical feedback after you ran a team meeting or had a tough conversation. Imagine if our teachers, nurses, and salespeople received highly technical feedback on their processes. If you want to have an elite team, begin coaching your people. If you want to be an elite leader, consider getting coached. If you would like more specific coaching ideas and techniques, please let me know. If there is demand, it is something I can focus more on. Do good and be well, Frederick
