Knock, knock...

Colleagues,

MVP: If we want to be better at helping people make good decisions, we need to learn more about the people and we do that by being present.

Today I will wrap up the saga of my crooked pocket door.

Recall:
  1. I tried to install a pocket door but when I was done, I noticed it was crooked.
  2. I explored three options: total redo, limited attempt to tweak it, leave it alone.
  3. I asked you which option was best.
  4. I suggested we would need to consider the opportunity cost to make a good decision.

Redoing the door is a four-hour job. Instead, I could:
  • Put a second coat of stain on my deck
  • Winterize the greenhouse
  • Build a sliding shelf for the cabinet in my kitchen which holds our pots
  • Install a light over the counter where I make my morning coffee
  • Watch The Ohio State Buckeyes win (hopefully) another game
  • Go hiking

Which should I do?

Of course, you can’t answer because you aren’t me.

However, if you ask enough questions, eventually you would be able to give me some guidance.

Here is the big take away…

Unless we know what’s going on in the lives (work and home) of our colleagues, we should be hesitant about judging them.

How do we learn what’s going on?

Be fully present.

Today’s intention: Identify one or two people who seem to be struggling to manage their priorities. Invest time in them, being fully present. Ask the second question or do some 5-minute coaching. Just ask and listen and learn.

Cheers!

Frederick
