Colleagues,
Yesterday I wrote about how getting past a fallen tree on a hiking trail would take different levels of effort from different people. Remember the fourth principle of leverage: motivation = value/effort (m=v/e). According to the formula, increasing the value of something increases motivation, as does decreasing the effort. One of the challenges in leading change is that the same task may require more or less effort from different people. Not only is the effort required based on their skills, knowledge, and experience, but it is also based on their life experiences, physical health, and emotional state. Before we question other’s motivation levels, maybe we need to better understand the effort we are asking them to put out. Cheers! Frederick
