Five ways to differentiate your communications

Five strategies for differentiating your communications. All strategies won’t work for all people, but if you can use one of these than your leadership will be incrementally better (A-B).
 

1. Do not use email for urgent communications. Condition people to expect delays in email responses (hours, not days). This frees you from being tethered to email and you can use these 14 strategies to strategically manage your email.

 

1. For contacts that must be able to reach you any time, program them in your phone to always ring through if they call twice in a row. Now you can leave your phone on silent and not worry about missing a critical call.

 

1. Turn off all non-professional alerts during your workday. They are just distractions.

 

1. Keep your phone on silent and place it face down on your desk.

 

1. Shut down your email when you are not using it.

 
Please understand that I am not saying that you should never be on your phone or engaging with email. I am suggesting that there are strategic times during most days in which you should not be subject to interruptions.
