Colleagues,
My son Lance told me this morning that he wants to teach me how to roll in a kayak tomorrow afternoon. My eyes got really big! They didn’t get big because of the activity, but rather because I am too busy. I have a couple of big days of training next week and really need to focus on getting them ready, in addition to a number of other things. So, my first response was “I can’t!” This initial response was my “urgent” response. There is so much to do that is urgent, that my reaction was to reject an opportunity to have a memorable experience with my son who is moving to Idaho in about three weeks. Now I’m pausing to take a breath, and to reflect. I’m also thinking about my three epiphanies, the three understandings that help me stay focused on what’s important over what is urgent. Epiphany one states that there is not enough time to do everything. There will never be enough time. I think about Lances invitation and then about my consulting work, all there is to do in the garden, and all of the household projects and I get overwhelmed. There is not enough time to do all of them. And there never will be. Surprisingly, this epiphany actually makes me feel better, not worse, especially as I consider the second epiphany, which we will look at tomorrow. Do good and be well, Frederick
