Did you see this coming?

Colleagues,

The diagram shows a continuum of events along two axis:

• singular to constant
• unforeseeable to foreseeable

 
This gives us four quadrants (yes, I love quadrants):

• Routine: we know what it is and when it will happen
• Predictable: we know what it is, we know it will happen, but not when
• Surprising: we aren’t sure what it is, and we didn’t see it coming
• Impossible: it happens all the time, but we don’t know it

​The framework is helpful in getting us to be more proactive.
 
For routine issues, we should invest time creating standard operating processes (SOPs) and in helping others be able to execute those SOPs.
 
For predictable issues, we should have some sort of minimally viable plan in place.
 
For surprising issues, we first need to pause, and then get help.
