MVP: Leadership feeling complicated? The essential things are being purpose driven and building relationships.
 
Recently I have had conversations with several people working in bad organizations. In every case, the issue was leadership. On Monday I laid out the six things good leaders do. Today, we’ll examine the opposite. Bad leaders…

1. Obscure organizational purpose by focusing on metrics or their own aspirations, or nothing at all.
2. Create structures that make it more difficult for people to do meaningful work.
3. Provide resources based on relationships or desires, not priorities.
4. Neglect developing their people but beat them down when they don’t perform.
5. In doing the previous four things, leaders create negative forces (chaos) within the organization.
6. Maximize the impact of negative external forces and minimize the benefit of positive external forces.

 
Honestly, leadership can feel overwhelming. Looking at that list above, how are we supposed to attend to all of those things?
 
There are two places we can begin:

• Be driven by the purpose. Always keep that first and foremost and you will naturally take care of many of the other pieces.
• Build relationships with people.
