Are you ready?

Colleagues,
 
I have a GREAT opportunity for you! It is fantastic! The best ever! It will change your life!
 
Sounds appealing, doesn’t it?
 
However, you aren’t completely ready to commit, are you?
 
You have some questions I’m sure. What are they?
 
The first three might be:

1. What will get out of it?
2. What does it cost?
3. How long will it take?

 
Those are great first questions, but there are some others that we sometimes neglect when we are presented with a “great opportunity”, among them:

1. What problem is this going to solve?
2. Exactly how will things be different if it is successful?
3. Will this move us closer to our purpose?
4. What is the opportunity cost? In other words, what else could I do with the resources that will be committed to the project? 

 
If you are thinking about committing to a change and you haven’t asked these questions (and answered them), then stop.
 
Remember that great organizations are ones in which people, structures, and resources are aligned with the organizational purpose. Make sure your idea is creating more alignment, and that it is the best investment of your resources.
