5 ways to create small memories

Colleagues,

Yesterday, I challenged you to make some small memories with special people this week.

Following are five simple ways to create small memories at work. All of them require you to be fully present.
  1. Find a big cookie and share it with one other person. Sharing one cookie is better than having one each because the sharing helps make the moment special. As you eat, ask what the person’s favorite cookie memory is.
  2. Give a high-quality beverage to someone (please don’t share your beverage!). You need one too. Drink together and focus on what makes the beverage excellent. Tell the person that the next time you drink that beverage, you will think about them.
  3. Go somewhere different to work. You could hold your meeting at a (outdoor) coffee shop, or a picnic table in the park, or somewhere else new. Include a component to the work that is strategic in nature and encourages people to think about the future in a positive way. Maybe include quality beverages and cookies!
  4. Give a very small gift that has meaning and a story. Give the gift and tell the story. The gift should be inexpensive and physically small. It is only a trigger for the memory.
  5. With a small team, ask each member (including yourself) to write on a sticky note what they appreciate about their colleagues, one note per colleague. Have them pass their notes to the people they wrote about and give everyone time to read. After a good long pause, ask each person to describe the team in one word. Capture the words and include them on future agendas.

If you create a memory this week, please consider sharing it with me.

Do good and be well,

Frederick
