Colleagues,
MVP: The problem is not time management ‑It is priority management. Kelli was an assistant principal at a small rural elementary school. She believed in managing her time well. Each day Kelli blocked time on her calendar to get into classrooms and observe teachers. She booked time to respond to email, and take care of scheduling, returning parent phone calls and all the other things she did in between monitoring buses and lunches each day. Each day, Kelli’s plans were upended by any number of things such as…
While Kelli used a variety of time-saving strategies, they only helped her get through her tasks. They didn’t help her get to the real work of supporting and developing her teachers. Time management strategies are beneficial, but they don’t lead to strategic leadership because time is not the problem. The problem for Kelli is that all the interruptions take priority over her primary job of keeping people safe and growing her teachers. Kelli’s problem is not time management, it is priority management. Next week I will offer you some short challenges to give you a peak into how to manage your priorities. On Thursday, March 2nd, I will tie those strategies together to shine more light on The Journey from urgent to strategic leadership in my free webinar. You can register here. On March 12th we will begin our five-week adventure to move from urgent to strategic using the content and challenges from my new book. Today’s intention: Think about the most important people you need to invest time with this week and be aware of the things that prevent you from investing in those people. Cheers! Frederick

Colleagues,
MVP: Step 1: escape urgency, step 2: build relationships, step 3: be the person others want to come see Today’s podcast episode features part 2 of my interview with Dr. Jan Osborn. At the end of the interview, I asked Jan what part of his leadership he was trying to get better at and he said: “The goal for me is not to be a leader. My goal is to be a good person, a good educator, and a good friend. I just want to be that person that people want to come see.” The challenge is that you can’t be that person people want to come see if you can’t ever get out to see them! It is all about relationships and relationships reflect how we invest time in being present with others. Next week each morning of the daily email (and a special Sunday edition) will feature a small, simple challenge to help you become more strategic. On Thursday, March 2, I will host a free webinar to help “sell” you on the idea that you can and should act now to become a more strategic leader. Block the time in your calendar now (7-8 pm EST). Early bird registration opens today and runs until 5:00 pm (EST) this Friday. The cost is free but registering helps me plan by knowing about how many people to expect. Growing your ability to mentor others requires intention, which is in short supply for urgent leaders. Today’s intention(s):
Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
MVP: You don’t have to be stuck in the black hole of urgency “Marketing is the work of helping people get what they’ve wanted all along” -Seth Godin, Thought Leader I do not market anything to you. I don’t have sponsors (commercials) on my podcast, nor are there affiliate links on my website. In fact, the only thing you could buy from me is a monthly membership in APEx, my assistant principal virtual community. However, for the next three weeks I will relentlessly work to convince you that it is time to escape the black hole of urgency by investing money in a five-week journey to move from urgent to intentional to strategic leadership. I am truly pained by how many school leaders can’t get into classrooms OR can’t follow up with adequate and appropriate support when the do get in. I’m truly saddened by how many business leaders are too busy to invest time learning why their people are not performing at a desired level. Strategic leaders focus on supporting and growing their people and strategic leaders exist! (See below the signature for links) What if you had the time in your day to learn more about what your people need and how you can support them? Today’s intention: Reflect in this…
Cheers! Frederick Episodes of The Assistant Principal Podcast that feature strategic leaders:
Colleagues, The Assistant Principal Podcast turns 100 today! You can wish us a happy birthday by listening to this very special episode – a heartfelt conversation with my mentor Dr. Jan Osborn. Find links to your listening apps here ! MVP: Everyone is doing the best they can
There are days that I do not achieve what I should achieve. I focus on work that isn’t important, I eat poorly, or go down an internet rabbit hole. Other days, I meditate, do yoga, do my morning writing, and am super-productive all day. So, like you, some days I struggle, some days I excel. Some seasons I am down, other seasons I am up. No matter what though, I am doing the best I can. Some days my best isn’t as good as others. I never get up thinking: • I’m going to be unproductive and unfocused today! • I’m going to give myself writer’s block today! • I think today I will feel lost and alone and feel sorry for myself! I don’t try to have a bad day, or week, or month, but sometimes it happens. Each day we do the best we can. Sometimes our best is better than others. Today’s intention: Think about today, yesterday, and the past few weeks. Did you have any “bad” days? Why? Did you try to have a bad day? Did you try and dig yourself out? Can you give yourself grace, and accept that bad days happen? Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
MVP: If you are a leader, people are the purpose “We all grow, that's for sure, but without people, we have no purpose.” You can listen to these words spoken by Dr. Jan Osborn on Friday’s 100th episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast. One of the new messages I am focusing on is people before purpose, but Jan takes this a step further in asking us to consider that people are the purpose! We lead because we want to make this world a better place. We make this world a better place by helping people to grow and develop. Today’s intention: Ask yourself and reflect: why do you choose to lead? Cheers! Frederick |
