What do a trail maintenance crew leader and a principal have in common?

MVP: Three core functions of leaders: Safety, ethical and legal, support and grow.

Two weekends ago, I joined with the Carolina Mountain Club to help remove some fallen trees in the Shining Rock Wilderness Area (a stunning place to play in!). 

Since this is a wilderness area, only hand-powered tools can be used. Several of us were inexperienced, so our Crew Leader, Paul, invested substantial time and attention making sure that everyone was safe.

Before we hit the trail, Paul had to make sure we had all signed waivers.

Throughout the day, Paul took time to explain, show, and teach proper techniques.

The three core functions of leadership:

• Keep everyone safe
• Meet the ethical and legal obligations
• Support and grow people

Whether you are a principal, non-profit director, mayor, preacher, or VP of sales, it still comes down to these three things.
