Permission to prepare less?

​My good friend Darrin Peppard and I co-led a training for middle school leaders last week.

Leading up to the event, both of us have had some challenging personal times, which meant we did not have a lot of capacity to pre-plan.

We knew what our leaders needed and we developed a really basic plan on how to get there, slapped together a very rudimentary slide deck, and did the training.

And it was awesome.

Here’s what I am trying to remind myself of:

• The slides don’t matter as long as they are “good enough”
• Goals and topics are essential, but the looser we are on how we get there, the more flexibility we have in meeting the needs of our people.

I am an over planner and control freak, but so much of my life the past four months has been unplanned and underprepared for. It is just that season.

And maybe I’m learning some important lessons.
