Colleagues,
MVP: Barriers can be within us or outside us. As a leader, there are some core practices you need to engage in. These may differ based on your organization, mission, and context, but you will likely have core practices related to keeping people safe, meeting your legal requirements, and supporting and growing your people. When we don’t execute our core practices, the challenge can lie in two different places – inside us, or outside us. If “things” are getting in the way, the problem is likely outside us. If we aren’t sure what to do or how to do it, then the problem is likely within us. If I’m not getting into enough classrooms to observe, that’s an external systems issue (we). If I don’t know how to use those observations to effectively help my teachers grow, that’s an internal issue with my own capacity (me). Reflecting critically on the barriers we face is a prerequisite to growth. Remember our new guide is out: Be a Better Leader in 5 Minutes a Day!
