Colleagues, MVP: There is nothing wrong with closing your door. Many leaders like to brag about having an open-door policy, but what happens when you are deep into a task and someone opens your door? Are you able to shift and be fully present for that person? To make that shift requires effort, as does returning to the task after your visitor leaves. And what happens if you are just getting back to work and another person arrives through your open door? I doubt they are going to get the best version of you. Maybe instead of an open-door policy you need a closed-door policy. Close your door and focus so you can leave your office and be fully present for others. You can explore other strategies for building relationships in my interview with the wonderful Dr. Don Parker. I’m happy to acknowledge Kaleidoscope Adventures as a sponsor of yesterday’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast! I appreciate their support and encourage you to connect with them if you are thinking about planning a school trip! Cheers!
