Way #4: There is power in a greeting

Whenever I visited my mother-in-law, Maggie, she would make my world stop.

She would cease all movement, look right at me, light up her biggest smile, and exclaim, “why Frederick!” And I knew, every time, for that instant, I was the most important person in her world. Maggie has left this world, but I can still hear her.

Way back on The Assistant Principal Podcast episode 147, I interviewed 2023 North Carolina Beginning Teacher of the Year, Natalia Meija. She greeted her students each day with “I am so glad you are here!”

Make your newbie’s world stop. Every time you see them.

If your newbie is a teacher, teach them to make their kids’ worlds stop too.
