From December 26-January 6 are the twelve days of Christmas (in some traditions) and we are celebrating each day with a fun leadership lyric and brief lesson. Original lyrics are here.
A process for proximity, Colleagues, The most special gift is presence (proximity), but giving it consistently requires intention. Reflect on the flow of your day and build in a time and habit (process) for being present with people. Cheers! Frederick

Colleagues,
MVP: Important issues are usually complex, so invest time uncovering the problem before treating the symptom. We won’t be sending out a message on the 24th or 25th, and beginning on the 26th we’ll rerun our series on the Twelve Days of Christmas. That means today’s message is the last one I will write for you in 2024. In reflecting on my growth this year, there are three things I am better at:
What about you? How have you grown? If you enjoy the daily email, please consider sharing your answer with me. It would be a great Christmas present. Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
MVP: A simple change in perspective can create dramatically different outcomes. I’ve been encouraging you to download my guide to Be a Better Leader in 5 Minutes a Day! By virtue of reading this email each day you are already engaging in the first practice – setting a leadership intention each morning. Little things add up to have a big impact. I hope you download the guide. Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
MVP: Barriers can be within us or outside us. As a leader, there are some core practices you need to engage in. These may differ based on your organization, mission, and context, but you will likely have core practices related to keeping people safe, meeting your legal requirements, and supporting and growing your people. When we don’t execute our core practices, the challenge can lie in two different places – inside us, or outside us. If “things” are getting in the way, the problem is likely outside us. If we aren’t sure what to do or how to do it, then the problem is likely within us. If I’m not getting into enough classrooms to observe, that’s an external systems issue (we). If I don’t know how to use those observations to effectively help my teachers grow, that’s an internal issue with my own capacity (me). Reflecting critically on the barriers we face is a prerequisite to growth. Remember our new guide is out: Be a Better Leader in 5 Minutes a Day! Click here to download and here to forward this email to a colleague! Cheers! Frederick Colleagues, MVP: If you can identify a weakness, you can grow. This is a good time of year to reflect on growth. I’m not sure how effective a new year’s resolution is, but if you don’t have some kind of plan for growing as a leader, how will growth happen? My Achilles Heel in the back half of this year has been about consistency. I know what I need to do, I know how to do it, I’m just not doing it frequently enough. Don’t get me wrong, it has been a GREAT year, but to make next year better, I need to be better. What about you? In today’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast, I discuss some specific actions school leaders can take to make the 2025 school year better than 2024. Today’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast is sponsored by IXL! Cheers!
