Colleagues, I can tell you how to do something, but until you have had a chance to practice, get feedback, and reflect, I can’t assume that you have learned it. This confusion between teaching and telling is a fundamental failing of leadership. Teaching includes an explanation of why we do things a certain way, practicing those things, getting feedback, and then reflecting. If someone isn’t doing what you want them to do, work through the process. You can hear more about teaching vs. telling in this week’s podcast! I’m happy to acknowledge Kaleidoscope Adventures as a sponsor of yesterday’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast! I appreciate their support and encourage you to connect with them if you are thinking about planning a school trip! Cheers!

Colleagues, This is brutally honest, though not 100% accurate: If someone you lead is not doing things the way you want them to be done, it’s your fault. There are context variables that may influence the degree to which this is true, such as:
These are legitimate (and all too common) qualifiers. Absent those conditions, it is your responsibility to grow your people. In today’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast, I go through an explicit example of how to teach a new teacher how to implement a classroom procedure. The premise is the teacher does not know how to do it for themselves. If you are struggling with anyone not doing “the thing,” this episode is for you. Thanks again to IXL for sponsoring today’s episode. Cheers!
Frederick Colleagues,
Last Wednesday was a podcast recording marathon and the fourth one of the day might be the best episode this year, but you’ll need to wait a week to listen to it. This year I will have an “official” Episode of the Year and a Runner-Up. I have a couple candidates and I’d love to hear from you. Here are my three favorite episodes from the year (so far). What do you think? One of these, or do you have another nominee? I’d love to hear from you, just hit reply and let me hear your thoughts.
Please let me know what your favorite episode this year has been! Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
Back on September 18th we wrapped up our 14th Now + Next cohort. It’s a program I partner with Nantahala Health Foundation on where we train non-profit, governmental, and educational leaders. Trainings include three days spread across five weeks. As I was packing up, I noticed an envelope laying on top of my notebook. Inside was a very kind thank you from one of the participants. It maybe took her five minutes to write. I have read it three times already and it lifts me each time. Maybe you could do something similar for someone in your workplace?
Keep it simple. You will make someone happier, and probably feel better yourself as well. Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
Why is delegation so hard? Maybe think about why YOU struggle to delegate. It could be:
These are all legitimate thoughts. On the flip side, what may not get done because you cannot delegate something else?
Life is just a series of tradeoffs. Cheers! Frederick |
