Colleagues,
Now + Next is a unique capacity-building leadership program for current and future non-profit, educational, and governmental leaders. I do this program in partnership with the Nantahala Health Foundation. We’ve trained over 100 leaders in the far-western part of North Carolina. We’ve been getting pressure from our alumni to do a 2.0 version of the training as they want more. My friends at the NHF and I have some thoughts about what a 2.0 should look like, but the best way to figure out the content is to ask the people who want it. I share this because one of the most common leadership mistakes I see is leaders deciding in isolation what another group of people need. So, if you are trying to meet someone’s needs, don’t guess. Ask. Cheers! Frederick

Colleagues,
Some mornings when I go to workout I’m just not feeling it. On those mornings, I will sometimes turn on a “motivational” speech to get me going. The core messages are pretty much the same in all of them:
I actually don’t think any of these things are true, but there is a seed of truth at the heart of the messages: We control our attitude. Somedays are harder than others, but in the end, it is (mostly) up to us to decide what kind of day we are going to have. Cheers! Frederick Colleagues, This week I’ll be at the South Carolina Association of Title 1 Administrators’ (SCATA) annual conference. I’ll be keynoting at lunch on Oct. 22 and have two breakout sessions on Thursday:
If you are at SCATA PLEASE come say hello! It was soooo cool! Two weeks ago I led a group of non-profit leaders through the SWOT. There were 10 leaders, all from different organizations. They completed the SWOT individually and then paired off to share and discuss. Then they worked with the same partner to fill out the stop-start-continue-consider (SSCC) tool with one partner recording the thoughts of the other. What happened was amazing as they began coaching each other through the SSCC process by referring back to the SWOT. We used the SWOT for an organizational perspective and the SSCC focused on the individual leader. You can hear more about it on yesterday’s episode and you can get your hands on a copy of both tools by emailing me here. Bonus points if you tell me about yourself and what your leadership focus is right now. I’m happy to acknowledge Kaleidoscope Adventures as a sponsor of yesterday’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast! I appreciate their support and encourage you to connect with them if you are thinking about planning a school trip! Cheers!

If you are at SCATA PLEASE come say hello! Not swat, SWOT. A SWOT analysis is a very quick and simple way to get some insights into your organization. By helping you look at the positives and negatives of your organization and the greater environment, you can think about how to leverage your strengths and anticipate challenges in the near or distant future. I love to use this tool with leadership teams by asking individual members to fill it out prior to meeting and then meet to collaborate and share perspectives. We’ve also used the SWOT as a way to assess and build common understanding about specific programs or initiatives we are running, doing a separate SWOT for each one. You can hear more on today’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast. If you’d like a copy of the SWOT tool as well as the stop-start-continue-consider tool (see tomorrow’s email), just email me here. Bonus points if you tell me about yourself and what your leadership focus is right now. Thanks again to IXL for sponsoring today’s episode! Cheers!

If you are at SCATA PLEASE come say hello! A couple weeks ago I told the story about the cottage cheese shortage and asked for your thoughts on how we prepare for an unforeseeable disruption. I appreciated your answers. There was a focus on leaders - helping them become resilient and adaptable problem-solvers. Not surprising given the audience. 😉 My thought is a bit different and might be surprising: systems, not people. Why?
