Colleagues,
I’ve recently rediscovered listening to motivational speeches and podcasts. I am fascinated by them. There is a fundamental oxymoronic truth to them… On one hand, the idea that we can overcome all barriers and achieve greatness, that obstacles don’t matter, is bs. There are some obstacles that can’t be overcome and we each have real (and unique) limitations on our physical, cognitive, emotional, and social attributes. On the other hand, what we do matters. Our attitude matters. The mindset we use matters. Don’t tell me I can be great. Or maybe, do tell me I can be great. If you see the greatness in me, maybe all those limitations change? I’ll be doing a whole week with links to my favorite speeches, so I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please share and if you have recommendations, please share them as well (yes Nat, GT will be on the list 😉). Cheers! Frederick

Colleagues,
I had four wins this morning before the sun ever came up. Win #1: I slept well Win #2: I journaled Win #3: I drove down to the recreation center (my gym) Win #4: I went into the recreation center and actually worked out Success begets success. A winning strategy is to structure your morning to be a series of wins that builds momentum for having a great day. Cheers! Frederick Colleagues, In yesterday’s re-released episode on the Assistant Principal Podcast, Angela Maiers said this: “We asked 500,000 thousand kids one question: what would make you run to school on your worst day? The results came back – they wanted to know someone was excited about their existence.” Like I say often, people are the purpose. Angela Maiers also shares her 2-5-2 formula, a simple technique for putting everything in the show into practice. It takes just minutes a day but creates a profound impact. It's about pausing, noticing, and letting people know their presence matters to you. Who are you letting know they matter today? I’m happy to acknowledge Kaleidoscope Adventures as a sponsor of yesterday’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast! I appreciate their support and encourage you to connect with them if you are thinking about planning a school trip! Cheers!
Frederick Colleagues, Today on The Assistant Principal Podcast, I decided to re-release an episode featuring Angela Maiers from all the way back in 2023. Angela Maiers talks about the science behind mattering. Angela’s proposition is simple – treat people as if they matter, and it will have a huge positive impact on both you and them. I have often shared the way Natalia Meija, NCCAT 2023 Empower NC Beginning Teacher of the Year, greets her students – with a big smile and a “I am so glad you are here!” This is so powerful because it communicates that the person matters. Angela has a basic formula for interacting with people, which I have tweaked slightly:
Today’s intention: Let someone know they matter. Thanks again to IXL for sponsoring today’s episode. Cheers!
Frederick Colleagues,
Last week I was speaking and presenting at the South Carolina Association of Title 1 Administrators’ (SCATA) annual conference. The #1 thing I wanted our educators and leaders to take away is that people are our purpose. It's the beginning of a new week. It’s also the last week of October. So, I have a challenge for you… Identify 1 person you want to support and grow more intentionally. This week, use the 5-minute coaching technique to prompt this person to reflect on something, specific or non-specific. If you need a reminder of 5-Minute Coaching, you can find it at the very top of our free resources page here. Remember, the key with 5mc is to just LISTEN! If you have any takeaways from your 5mc session, I’d love to know! You can share them with me here. Cheers! Frederick |
