Colleagues,
Our annual summer tradition is to share the most important things I’ve learned from other people. This summer we have 20 lessons that you will receive throughout the next few weeks. If you feel particularly moved and want to share a reaction, please reply! This first week focuses on how we treat others. 1. Everyone deserves respect, period This is such a powerful belief for two reasons. First, it frees you from trying to judge people, which is a quite taxing and useless exercise that most of us engage in far too often. Respect people because they are people and don’t worry about trying to decide whether or not they deserve it – they are human beings, so they do. Intention: Monitor how often you judge people. The Assistant Principal Podcast is continuing to grow, and we want to take the show to the next level of quality. If you are a regular listener, please use this link to reply with what you like best about the podcast (so we keep it in) and what ways we could improve the podcast (so we can fix it). Thanks! Cheers! Frederick

Colleagues,
MVP: The better you are, the harder it is to improve. It’s easier to make big gains on things that aren’t working well than on things that are really good. Accelerating the growth of an early career teacher is easier than making big gains with a 20-year veteran. Similarly, improving The Assistant Principal Podcast was easy when it was new, but now it’s more difficult. Today’s message is actually a call for help. We need your feedback to help make it easier for us to make the podcast better! The Assistant Principal Podcast is continuing to grow, and we want to take the show to the next level of quality. Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
MVP: Check your stress – it may be self-imposed There are some health issues in the Buskey household that have made for a couple uncertain and chaotic weeks. My capacity to get things done, especially deep work like writing and developing training materials, has been limited. I’ve tried to stay on top of my priority list, but to no avail. Last night, I contemplated staying up late to finish an article and edit a two-part podcast because the stress of not having them done was building. As I worked through my decisions I realized two things:
The stress of finishing them that night was entirely self-imposed. There are some other projects I need to work on this week, but none of them have drop dead due dates until next week. So, I encourage you to reflect critically on the things that are causing you stress. Is the stress warranted or self-imposed? Cheers! Frederick Colleagues, MVP: Systems and structures support sustainability If something isn’t working, there is probably a system or process related to it. For example:
One way to improve outcomes is to improve systems. The added benefit of improving systems is how those systems endure after you are gone. What is one system you should consider improving? Will Lepech and I go deeper into this on yesterday’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast. I’m happy to acknowledge Kaleidoscope Adventures as a sponsor of yesterday’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast! I appreciate their support and encourage you to connect with them if you are thinking about planning a school trip! Cheers!
Frederick Colleagues, MVP: Reflecting will help you uncover the rock. When did you last reflect? Feeling thoughtful today? I hope so. Will Lepech, a long-time reader and listener, is my special guest on today’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast. This is a very thoughtful episode and it will spur some reflection for you. My favorite quote? “Uncover the rock.” What does it mean? Listen to the show! Today’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast is sponsored by IXL! Cheers!
