When is a morning not routine?

6/7/2024

Colleagues,

MVP: The solution to the problem is not always obvious.

In teaching about how to use small change to solve big problems, I often use the example of a morning routine. The first time we meet, we identify the components of a healthy morning routine and then ask participants to implement them.

The success rate is about 10%, so it is a great opportunity to dig into the root cause of “why can’t I implement a morning routine?”

The photo below captures their answers from the first step of problem identification in which we capture possible reasons.

In the next step we dig deeper into each “why”.

Where we inevitably land is that people have a tough time letting go of their work, which negatively impacts their sleep.

In my latest training, participants identified a simple A-B step: For one week, take 10 minutes at the end of the day to journal all your thoughts.

Could the answer to a healthier morning routine be journaling twelve hours before you get up?

Maybe.

And if it is not, what have we lost?

This is working A-B.

Cheers!

Why cucumbers are better than tomatoes

Colleagues,

MVP: A-B is more valuable than A-Z.

Cucumbers are A-B, whereas tomatoes are A-Z.

Cucumbers ripen sooner, they produce more (at least here in WNC), and require less attention.

M=V/E

Cheers!

Even while you are shaving?

Colleagues,

MVP: Sorry, you need to read this one…

On May 14 in the daily message, I said I was better at being more present than I used to be, and I received a question from a reader (you know who you are, and you bring me so much joy!). The question and my response follow:

I'd be interested in hearing the distinctions between how you are more present now than before. Specifically, I'm interested in how you describe the "before" so that it's recognizable.

Wow - as always you make me think.

Three things jump immediately to mind:
  • It has become more of my default. When I encounter someone, my reaction is to attend to them. I don’t need to consciously clear my mental cache.
  • It is not just with people. I attend to the motion and feel of the razor scraping hair from my cheek. I can hear the keyboard clicking. The tiny flowers capture my attention. I see God in the center of a trillium.
  • I am more intentional about clogging my head with noise. Still too often I turn on a podcast or take my phone into the bathroom, but I do it intentionally, aware of the cost, aware that I am losing the peace that comes with allowing my mind to be still.

Today’s intention: What are you doing to cultivate presence?

Cheers!

Colleagues,

What’s the difference between telling, teaching, and coaching?

Today’s guest on The Assistant Principal Podcast is Elena Aguilar, who I consider to be a giant in the area of coaching. Her book, The Art of Coaching, has informed and inspired me since it came out a decade ago.

If you are interested in coaching as a vehicle for helping others grow, please consider listening.

Thanks again to IXL for sponsoring today’s episode.

Am I better?

Colleagues,

MVP: Reflect on your growth as a leader

As we enter June, and a new season, here are three questions you should be thinking about:
  1. In what ways am I a better leader today than I was a year ago?
  2. What evidence (impact) suggests I am better now than a year ago?
  3. What did I do that helped me get better?

Today’s intention: If you feel inspired, consider sharing your answers with me. It would help me learn and grow, so I too can be a better leader next season. Click here to reply.

Cheers!

Frederick
