Colleagues, In yesterday’s sector agnostic episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast, Julie Hasson and I explored the notion of self-care. Julie said something that really has me thinking: “Self-care is more about doing what is good for me than what feels good to me.” I love this. Binging on fruit loops and video games makes me feel good. Camping in the woods is good for me. Remember, you can also find more stress support with Julie’s 25 Stress Resets using this link. I’m happy to acknowledge Kaleidoscope Adventures as a sponsor of yesterday’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast! I appreciate their support and encourage you to connect with them if you are thinking about planning a school trip! Cheer!

Colleagues, Alert! This (and next) week’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast is sector agnostic. If you are experiencing stress, I encourage you to listen. My guest is Dr. Julie Hasson, one of the kindest and most gracious people I know. Julie and I dig into burnout, toxic positivity, and self-care. We also cover the three parts of your transition from work to home:
Thanks again to IXL for sponsoring today’s episode! Cheers!
Frederick Colleagues,
My good friend and colleague Darrin Peppard has a wonderful Monday newsletter. I love it because it is very hands on, short, and practical. Last week, Darrin talked about April Drift - the tendency to lose focus in the spring. He mentioned real consequences and shared some of the first things we lose sight of when we drift. I have a two-fold challenge:
Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
I shared yesterday how there were things I let go of during my chaotic first quarter of 2026. Here are some of the specific things I stopped doing that had zero negative impact on my business (in other words, they are irrelevant):
Here’s the thing: Almost everything on my list is relevant to how I worked when I was still teaching in both P-12 and Higher Ed. Read that list again. PLEASE consider replying to this email and tell me one of the things that you could stop doing. Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
I wrote Monday about the MVP slide deck I used in a recent training. In the first quarter of 2026, I was cutting a lot of corners as I traveled back and forth to the west coast trying to help a close family member in an acute mental health crisis. Every aspect of my life, including my business, was disrupted and I found myself working sporadically for short bursts of time. And my business did great in the first quarter. As I’ve reflected on what didn’t get done, I’ve realized how inefficiently I have spent much of my time in my business. Yes, there is always more I could do, but it won’t all get done – ever. Early 2026 forced me to let go of everything that wasn’t mission critical. Tomorrow, I’ll share some of the things I stopped doing. Cheers! Frederick |
