Colleagues, MVP: Reflect – are there things you should stop doing? In today’s conversation with Charles Williams, we break down multiple ways to say “No!” to taking on more things. At one point, Charles offered this gold nugget: “If you weren’t already doing it, would you start doing it today?” I love this question as it invites us to reflect critically. Maybe let this thought bounce around in your head today and see if you find anything. Today’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast is sponsored by IXL! Cheers!

Colleagues,
MVP: #4 - Communicate honestly, especially in difficult times. Being vulnerable is being honest and it creates a safer culture. Lately I’ve had some really great podcast interviews (IMHO) and the same themes keep popping, one of which is vulnerability. As leaders we are supposed to be perfect and all-knowing, but that’s not what being human is about. When we display vulnerability, we communicate we are human. AND… …when it is okay for us to make mistakes, we create an environment in which other people can make mistakes and still be safe. AND… …it is very difficult to grow without making mistakes. And in a touch of irony (?), the disclaimer box at the bottom of this message explains me being vulnerable. Honestly, I did not plan it that way 🤣. Being vulnerable: I’m struggling to come up with fresh ideas for the daily email, so I asked ClaudeAI to generate a list of the 25 key actions for leadership. I will use ClaudeAI’s words for the MVP and everything else will be my take on the idea. I’ll cover the top ten over the next few weeks. Counting down backward of course! Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
MVP: #5 - Align actions with core values consistently. If I’m honest, there were many times my actions did not align with my espoused values. One of the culprits is urgency, because urgency drives us to focus on tasks instead of people, and when we stop focusing on people, we stop aligning our values and actions. Remember four choices you get to make multiple times every day:
I’m not sure, but I think when we answer those questions in the affirmative, we can’t help but align our actions with our values. In a way, answering these questions is a hack or shortcut to being true to yourself. What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts, stories, ideas. Just hit reply. Frederick Colleagues,
MVP: #6 - Make decisions decisively when needed. Depending on your leadership style, this can be easy or difficult. For me, it’s difficult. Here’s the thing: We make the best decision we can with the information we have at the time. Returning to Monday’s message, give yourself grace if your decision doesn’t pan out. Learn and move on. Being vulnerable: I’m struggling to come up with fresh ideas for the daily email, so I asked ClaudeAI to generate a list of the 25 key actions for leadership. Frederick Colleagues, MVP: Making them better makes me better. In our discussion on yesterday’s podcast, Saani Perry said “If I make them better, that makes me better.” In summarizing the show, I accidentally wrote the quote down as “If I make them better, they make me better.” I really like the misquote because it captures how interconnected we are. You’ll hear that in the interview – all the ways in which an AP communicates to a variety of stakeholders: we are on the same team. -- I’m happy to acknowledge Kaleidoscope Adventures as a sponsor of yesterday’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast! I appreciate their support and encourage you to connect with them if you are thinking about planning a school trip! Cheers!
