Appreciation - it’s simpler than you think

Colleagues,

A couple weeks ago I received an inquiry from a devoted reader (and good friend), Brooke Mathis.

She asked about elevating an organization’s culture, especially in regards to appreciation. She asked about recognition programs and other strategies. My response follows…

Briefly:

• Small things, now and frequently are worth more than big things every once in a while
• Asking questions and listening (not giving answers or taking back the conversation) is incredibly powerful
• Praising small but specific actions frequently communicates real value (e.g. “I love how you gave that person such an awesome smile - you make so much impact here.”

Imagine a culture where people routinely do these three things. It communicates value, respect, and care.

Also, in listening, people will tell you what their pain points are, and then you can work on those to support them.
